Keep the flies in the water. The fish are biting and now is the time to go. The Allegheny has been fishing great and the Clarion is active with surface feeders. July and August are also great times to get out and fish your favorite stillwaters for bass, pike and trout. If you don't have access to a drift boat or the lake or pond your fishing doesn't have great access try a personal watercraft, like a float tube or pontoon. The experience while floating around is much nicer than casting from the bank. See you on the water.

Allegheny and Clarion Report

This week has been unreliable with weather. During the daytime it's been perfect for fly fishing on the Allegheny and Clarion rivers. Overcast skies, light breeze and trout willing to bite. Even though few fish have been rising to actual hatches we've stumbled upon a few risers and fish willing to eat attractors on the surface. July and August are knocking on our doorsteps, the perfect season for hopper dropper action. Check back for reports and how to fish dry dropper rigs in North Western PA's great trout waters. See you on the river!

Calm days, with a slight summer breeze have allowed for smooth conditions on the large pools of the Allegheny this week. In the tailouts and edges of these pools, small schools of brown trout have been cruising, picking off spent caddis, BWO's and other surface foods. Using the drift boat we've been hunting these pools for the opportunity to cast dries to finicky, feeding browns. Long leaders, Light tippets and properly presented dries have fantastic rewards. See you on the river.

With a run of wet weather this spring we've had tough conditions on the Allegheny Tailwater, below the Kinzua Dam. This past week has brought ideal conditions for drifting and wading the river. The upcoming forecast is for nice flows and if the weather stays dry it will continue to get better. As far as hatches a few sulphurs, certain eddies have brown drakes and the Allegheny river caddis are thick. During cloudy days I've been seeing some BWO's with a few fish turning onto them. The pictures above are of a couple of rainbows I caught while wade fishing this afternoon. This past week, while drifting, I picked up fish throughout the entire river system between Warren and the Dam in all of the usual spots. One of the picks above is a rainbow that was stocked as a fingerling last summer. There are many of these guys around that are fun to catch, especially in the Alleghenies swift flows. Hope to see you below the dam. Best Fishes.

While bluegill fishing this summer always be prepared for the occassional bass to come in and eat your offerings. Often while casting poppers along gravel bars for gills I'll get a bucketmouth or a bronzeback. What a great suprise!!! The fish above took a small rubber legged streamer. My dogs love wading with me while casting for bluegills. Have fun this summer on your favorite small pond or lake, you never know you might get suprised too.
